My name is Nathan Thompson, and I am a counselling therapist and the owner of Block House Counselling & Psychotherapy Services in Fredericton, NB.
I provide individual therapy for adults and young adults in a private practice located just off Waterloo Row in Fredericton’s downtown heritage district. I offer both in-person and virtual therapy sessions.
People come to therapy for many different reasons. Some arrive feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, panic, depression, stress, grief, or relationship difficulties. Others feel emotionally stuck, disconnected from themselves, uncertain about who they are, or exhausted from carrying things alone for too long. Many people are not necessarily in crisis, but simply want a space to better understand themselves, their relationships, and the patterns that continue to shape their lives.
Therapy is not about being judged or “fixed.” At its best, it becomes a space where difficult thoughts, emotions, experiences, and questions can be explored openly, honestly, and without shame.

My approach is relational, insight-oriented, and collaborative. While my work is informed by psychoanalytic psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), existential approaches, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), I do not believe therapy should feel rigid or manualized. Every person brings a different history, personality, and way of relating to the world, and therapy should reflect that complexity.
I work with a wide range of concerns, including:
- anxiety and chronic worry
- panic attacks and agoraphobia
- health anxiety
- obsessive-compulsive difficulties
- depersonalization and derealization
- depression and emotional numbness
- grief and loss
- trauma and difficult past experiences
- shame and self-criticism
- relationship and family difficulties
- existential concerns and questions around meaning
- sexuality, intimacy, and identity
- gender and sexual identity exploration
- struggles related to religion or spirituality
I also have a particular interest and background in working with issues related to sexuality, intimacy, shame, identity, and relationships. You can learn more on my Sexuality, Intimacy & Gender page.
Why “Block House”?
The name “Block House” comes from the history of the property where my office is located. The heritage home attached to my office was built in 1840 by Irish master mason John Block and has been part of Fredericton’s history for nearly two centuries. Over the years, many people have passed through its doors for conversation, learning, and connection, including generations of piano students taught in the home by a previous owner.
I wanted the name to reflect a sense of continuity, warmth, and human connection. My hope is that Block House can continue to be a place where people feel welcomed, understood, and able to speak openly about what they are carrying.
I also provide clinical supervision to licensing candidates with the College of Counselling Therapists of New Brunswick.
